As I left work and headed South on the PCH I got to Mugu rock and traffic was halted. I saw a helicopter overhead, lots of road flares, and flashing lights. I thought for sure that couldn’t be good but not what I expected either. I had figured it was a motorcycle crash and the helicopter in the air was a medical flight leaving the scene. But instead it’s some psycho driving their Accord into the ocean. Glad they were able to rescue a dog at least though!

Kinja'd!!!

Taken the same day coincidentally from a hike I did at lunch time. Immediately below this point is where the car went into the drink. Cool view though at least. I’m sure people were up there when it happened and might have witnessed it. It’s a popular sunset spot.

Kinja'd!!!

Was going for something here, not sure what though.

Dude you should get a Pixel 2 since you’re always taking cool pictures of PCH and the surrounding area.

And the Pixel 2 is awesome.

I’m also very jealous you get to use PCH to commute while I’m stuck on the 101.

Am I missing something about this story as to why we’re all super pissed off at this (deceased) driver? My first reaction was that the driver got distracted rather than suicide.

Thats what I was thinking, that area is not exactly twisty or anything. Sure its cool to drive through there but you could easily go 100+ without an issue in that spot in an accord.

If I wanted to spend money on a phone, a Pixel would definitely be a strong consideration. EXCEPT for that whole lack of headphone jack part. I refuse to support a phone that gets rid of that. Sure I actually use my phone on bluetooth 90% of the time (in the car) but I have headphones I wouldnt use any other way. More importantly though I dont want to spend $500+ on a phone. I dont even want to spend $200... This phone was a whopping total of like $70 lol.

I mean you could go take the 101 too, even though its far more impractical lol. You could at least go to Portero road, that ought to be better. Google maps always tells me to take the 101 to get home but I know better than to mess with that on the regular. It is 37 minutes with no traffic and making liberal use of 15-20 over. About 42 minutes in light traffic, 55 at night would be decent, and its usually about 1hr5min. I can take the PCH to Encinal to Mulholland to Topanga and get home in 58 min regularly, even though gmaps says thats 1hr12min. Encinal can be VERY fast if you try for it lol.

I was only mad because it caused traffic for me and I missed a nice scenic section while there was still a little bit of post sunset daylight left. Unfortunate for the loss regardless of the reason.

In an Accord. On a straight section of road. This was right at sunset so there is a TON of traffic there. People always watch the sunset right from there. I am surprised he didnt take anyone out on the way down. Had to be traumatic for the sunset viewers to witness that. There had to have been at least 100 witnesses...

That’s what I said. It was also fucked up to do it where he did and make all of that traffic.

Not cool man.

Oh the headphone jack really does grind my gears. For the first few weeks when I went to use headphones, which is rare, I would forget and get mad. Thankfully I haven’t run into a dongle nightmare of having to try and charge and listen to music at the same time.

If I thought it would do any good by spending my money on another phone with an aux jack, I would. But I don’t think it will matter, and I am stuck with Google. I’ve had a Nexus for years and I’m so used to getting updates quickly, and not having to deal with bloated skins.

It was really, really hard spending a thousand dollars on a damn phone, though. But just like Apple snobs, I gotta have me that Google.

———————————

If there were a fun way for me to take to and from work, even if it cost me a few minutes, I would totally take it. There is nothing I hate more than being stuck in stop and go traffic for no reason. You are very lucky being able to take PCH and then the canyons home.

I chose where I am living based on being able to do that commute. It is not so much luck lol. I would consider myself luckier if I could live in like Camarillo and have a 15 minute commute. But my girlfriend would subsequently have a commute topping two hours at that point probably.

I gotta have me that Google too, but my number one priority is battery life. Followed by haivng a microSD slot and then being small enough to fit in my pocket. Then comes cost and finally performance. Cheap phones used to SUCK but now the only things I am really missing are water resistance, high PPI screen, fancy cameras, and the absolute latest Android OS. My POS can last 2 days easily and has never had slow problems for day to day use. It will run google maps and a music player and still respond to inputs so I am happy and make it through the whole day like that (without the screen on).

I really liked my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. It had everything I wanted plus the latest and greatest features. Except it was just WAYYY too fragile. After breaking the second one and then breaking three replacement screens (aftermarket ones were even worse) I gave up on that debacle.

Well I still live with me madre because I’m in school, and we did pick our house based on where she works, and we’re only two miles away from that. I worked by house for a few years, and it was wonderful. I wish more than anything I could go back to working close to home. But, it won’t be so bad when I finish law school since I can just go back to taking the train and then never have to drive, unless I want to.

My top priority is actually the OS. My mom had a Samsung and I fucking hated it, so I will never switch to anything other than a Google phone. It’s kind of like asking a long time Windows user to switch to Mac, it’s just not going to go well.

Well no, its more like asking a Dell user to switch to a Toshiba. Its still running the same OS just with some extra crap on different hardware. I don’t like the bloatware thrown on there by Samsung and Touchwiz does some stupid stuff, but its hardly a big deal. I have a Nexus 7 which runs vanilla android and I do prefer it over my Samsung phone. But I am happy regardless so long as it is Android. I could MAYBE give IOS a shot if they had SD support, better batteries, and a less toxic UI. Unwilling to give up my 128gb microSD full of music, I refuse to jump on the streaming bandwagon. I don’t have cell service over most of my commute so that would be a real drag.

Yeah, you make a good point. I guess I’m just a big baby when it comes to that.

I used to have an iPod Touch, so I knew how to use some of the early versions of iOS, but now I literally can’t use it because it so different from Android. I know iOS is supposed to be a lot simpler than Android, but to me, it seems to dumbed down it’s just not usable in a logical manner.

Have you considered getting a reasonably priced music player? I think something like a FiiO X3 , for a simple music player, would be good. I tried one of the higher end FiiO players that was basically an Android phone without a cell radio. It was a little expensive, and not worth it to me. But if you have a ton of music and plug it into an aux point it would be good.

I used to love having a separate music player (Sansa Clip+ with custom firmware for the longest time) but that was more importantly to have something smaller and simpler than a phone to deal with. But I have since grown to love Poweramp on Android so its ideal for me to just use my phone. I would prefer to just have one device that I carry everywhere anyways. I do keep it hooked up via bluetooth most of the time since its just easier in the car. Most rental cars nowadays seem to have bluetooth too which is nice. All of my music is still in .ogg format which instantly kills any hope of an apple device handling things as well. CANNOT STAND mp3 files since it will take up a shit ton of room or sound like garbage at lower bitrates.

I find the same issue with IOS, it is so simple in its design that its actually harder for anyone computer literate to use. Sure I suppose you could get used to it but it’s anything but intuitive. I think the biggest problem for me is only having one button. Not having a separate home and back button pisses me off to no end. I still miss Android having a dedicated settings button but that one wasn’t nearly as important. In general, I have always found that I could totally avoid using my laptop for anything outside of typing something if I just use my Nexus 7 tablet. However, if I try to use an iphone or ipad, there are so many limitations that I still absolutely need a laptop for things.

I’ve had an iPod Classic for years, as I have been entrenched in stupid effing iTunes, and my car, both actually, have an old iPod interface, and it sounds way better than bluetooth. But, in rental cars I will resort to Bluetooth, but then, I have to use Pandora (which I pay for) since I don’t have any music stored locally on my phone. I have just migrated all of my music to my Plex server, though, so now I won’t be reliant on Pandora, which will be nice.

Oh my god, no back button. I want to throw iPhones when I forget there is no back button. I don’t get how they use their phone. I hate having to memorize some sort of Morse code to be able to use your phone, which is why the dedicated app drawer button is so nice on Android.

There aren’t a lot of thing I need my laptop for anymore, mainly because I hate Windows. And I just got a Pixelbook because I hate Windows so much; I was tired of getting to class at the last minute and then having to wait five or ten minutes for it to update. That’s never an issue with Chrome. I got my mom a Chromebox years ago because she always had some problems with Windows, and now, she has zero with the Chromebox. It probably helped I stuffed as much RAM as possible into the Chromebox, but simplicity of the software has so much to do with it.
